Dumb witness
By
Agatha Christie
Was my January entry for
#readchristie2021
“A story set in Grand House.”
It is a year long Readathon organized by Official Agatha Christie (Instagram)
also check their Official website for more details and suggestions.

This story features Bob the wire fox terrier Dog 🐕 and I loved his part in the book..
And the end for the Bob was very satisfactory..
Bob’s and Hastings chemistry was pretty good 👻

Overall end of the book was also satisfactory considering the situation they were in.
.
I will suggest don’t read the blurb before reading this one.
Coz I didn’t and that way we enjoy it better.

In the beginning we come across all the incidences leading till actual murder.
In many of Christies book it happens and I always felt bored while listening to that without Poirot. But in this one it was interesting to know. I don’t know why. It felt like we are getting change to analyse the things before the murder happend.
.
Even after that I was not able to guess correctly 😂.
As always I got fooled in the end.

Infact I felt that by now I should know how she thinks and should be able to guess the person. But except that person I thought about all others 😅.
.
Along with Queen of crime
She is also Queen of fooling us 😂.

You see in any book when murder happens and we are looking at the witnesses.. most of the time we like atleast one character.. here all were unlikable and seemed to me that few were shown so, to fool us (coz in the end we see different side of them). We felt pity for some characters but no i couldn’t like anyone. I only liked Bob (the dog)

In many books featuring Hastings with Poirot we feel irritated with Hastings and not just irritated but we don’t like his narration too. (Still to see it from his side is better)

But in this book I liked Hastings narration and Hastings also. He wasn’t irritable as always. Ofcourse his chemistry with Bob was added bonus.

Some interesting facts about the book :
.

This is 16th book featuring Poirot and Second last book featuring Hastings… After this Hastings and Poirot feature in Curtain which is 42nd book featuring Poirot.
.
Dumb witness was earlier a short story called as ‘The incident of Dogs ball’ and was lost for many years. Eventually they found it in 2005 in Christie’s daughter’s personal effects.
.
Many critics found mistakes in this story but according to them it’s still better than an average thriller.
It definitely keeps you hooked from first page itself.
And you can’t just stop.
.
Christie has Dedicated this book to her beloved Dog Peter (short-haired Terrier) and he was also on the cover of the book.

I intend to read more books by Christie this year. (And all her books some day, maybe in a year or two I can achieve that goal)

Thoughts on “Steve Jobs the man who thought different” by ‘Karen Blumenthal’

Yeah I read this one and not the Walter Isaacson one.
If you want to read detailed biography then Walter Isaacson one is recommended.
(I will read it sometime in future).

I found this in Library and thought of trying.
It was only around 250 pages
As compared to Isaacson one
(it’s around 500 pages).

The author Karen Blumenthal is Journalist who writes business biographies and has written biographies on many famous people.
While writing this one she read many other biographies written on Steve Jobs (which are more than 10)
And reconciled the things which she thought are important.

The only apple I can own is the fruit 😂

Other than the one by Walter Isaacson
“The little kingdom” by Michael Moritz is rich in detailed reporting of Jobs early life.
For his crazy fans

So back to Karen one.
It had simple language. Easier than what we read normally.
Considering that many non-readers read the biographies of their favourite icon, this is perfect for them.
Easy language and fast narrative.
I was thinking if biographies are like these then I can read atleast one each month 😂.
Maybe I felt so coz I was very much interested in knowing more about him.
Earlier I didn’t have enough courage to read biography..
(Now I see that I have read around 6-7 biographies 🙈).

I was also kind off little fan of his.
I had collected his newspaper cuttings (it will still be there somewhere).
.
When I saw that his personal life wasn’t that good or iconic I was kind off disappointed.
But we see many people make mistakes in young age and try to correct them later on.
.
Considering that some people don’t even try to correct that I was kind off relieved that he atleast tried. (And he succeeded)

One thing which he was blessed with was supportive family..
The wife and children who understood that a person who is doing such an important work won’t have all the time in his life for them, are blessing.
.
Many busy businessman have messed up marriage but he was lucky to have such a supportive family.
It is important to find someone who has similar perspective towards life..

The important thing which got me Inspired again was that he always followed his heart.
These days we see the business advisors and all ask you to listen to brain and hustle.

You definitely should hustle but when you have to achieve what your heart wants.
When you will hustle for what your heart doesn’t want it will be struggle and you might not even be happy.
Then what’s the use of struggle if you are not happy in the end.
.
I am the one who does what heart says and people used to laugh at me 🤣..
Well now I have Steve for support 😉

And you all know what a brilliant businessman he was, product is in front of you.
But yeah there are many lessons in his life.
Even after one success he was hell bent on doing more and more.
The creativity and brilliant innovative products.
Coming out of failure more than once..
It was all very inspiring life.
.
Do read his biography from any author you want.
It was brilliant life.
With mistakes, failures and multiple success 🤘

Truly an inspiration

He was difficult person to handle sometimes.. but who isn’t ..?

And was perfectionist in developing his products, because if which his staff might have faced some issues but then.. how can you be a perfect businessman without that thirst for top level perfection…?

Evidence of the affair by Taylor Jenkins Reid (Epistolary short story)

Evidence of the affair
By
Taylor Jenkins Reid
.
Again a Short story 🙈
It is Amazon’s original stories, you can read it for free if you are prime member or have Kindle unlimited membership.

I saw this on bookstagram and downloaded it..but I forgot who posted about it 😬..

As name suggests, it talks about affair.
.
Carrie finds love letters written to her husband and she writes letter to that woman’s husband and thus starts their correspondence.
Both talk about their partners infidelity and are trying to decide what to do ..
Whether to confront with them or not ..?

Both connect with each other and understand each others feelings.
They console each other and help each other to overcome their grief and loneliness.

I really found their relationship beautiful.
Both understand what they missed in their earlier relationship and how this new found friendship helped them to understand themselves better.

You can try this one but be sure it will be sad..
But that friendship is interesting

This is epistolary short story (written in the form of letter)
I have never read epistolary novel
When I saw this I decided to read it..
.
#qotd : Have you read any epistolary novel ..?
Do suggest me some ..
.
.
Hope you are enjoying your weekend ..

Thoughts on Graceful burdens and small insight on Dystopia

One more Dystopian novella
This one also makes me wanna ask the author why didn’t they made it into a full fledged novel…?
.
It is so good, the imagination
The diverse characters.
And the main story.

We all have heard about library of books but what you never thought of is
Library of Babies…
Where you can take the baby with you for few days to take care of them and return them (like we return books )

I know it doesn’t sound good it’s like objectification of babies i.e. humans
And i didn’t like it at all but what can we expect from a dystopian world..
Really it could have been a great novel.
But yeah definitely a sad world.

When I was talking about all the Dystopia books I read,
Someone told me that creating a dystopian world is kind off sadistic.
Psychologically speaking it is (saw few articles on it, I am no expert in psychology)
If you call a dystopian writer sadist then what will you call a person who reads and enjoys the book.
I didn’t enjoy the situation but I liked the story....and I read quite a few Dystopia stories..I don’t know what to think.( It’s kind off stressful) but I will surely give it a thought and come back with new post.

Back to novella
Why would you take another person’s baby ?
Bcoz you are not allowed to have babies, its government’s order.
.
Government controls who can have baby and who cannot.
What happens to ppl without babies ?
What happens with those who have babies but don’t want them ?
How is the life of the girls who can’t have babies ?
.
There is this one women who is categorised as unlicenced coz she can’t have baby and decided to live her life in her way instead of following her parents will..
Do check out this one to know more ..

This story is part of ‘Out of line’  Amazon original series an incisive collection of funny, enraging and hopeful stories of women empowerment and escape.
Each story can be read in one thought-provoking sitting …
Kindle unlimited members and Amazon prime members can try these for free..
.
I have read just one and will read others soon and share will you all.

These are the novella in “Out of line” series ..do check out if you are interested in novellas..

#qotd : Those who have read this. What’s your take on the name “Graceful burdens” ?

Why is it called Graceful burdens..? For one of the few women in the book babies were graceful burden but what about other ..? They weren’t graceful burden for all.

But the life of other characters did revolve around babies. Like they lived and worked for the babies and the freedom of the babies. It was what they choose hence I guess graceful works here in good way to then accept it burden too.

I don’t know maybe I am totally wrong and would love to know what author thought before naming it “Graceful Burdens”

My thoughts on : The Machine Stops by E. M. Forster

Then she generated the light, and the sight of her room, flooded with radiance and studded with electric buttons, revived her. There were buttons and switches everywhere – buttons to call for food for music, for clothing. There was the hot-bath button, by pressure of which a basin of (imitation) marble rose out of the floor, filled to the brim with a warm deodorized liquid. There was the cold-bath button. There was the button that produced literature. And there were of course the buttons by which she communicated with her friends. The room, though it contained nothing, was in touch with all that she cared for in the world.”

Do you feel like visiting that room …?
.
Before that also consider next part.

People live in isolation. They don’t meet anyone. They only video call, there is no physical touch. They haven’t seen sky, stars or earth. They have to take precautions before leaving the house..
.
Now do you want to go there .. ?
Oh wait …
You have been through it …
Haven’t you..?

Well this one was written in 1909.
A dystopian world
Were people are depended on machines for everything.
And is pretty much similar to our world right now the only difference is that we got this through viruses and they got it through machines.
.
We all know it can actually happen due to machines too.
We have seen many ppl predict it.
Right now also we are almost depended on machine
First our phones then laptops…. appointments through phones and meetings through phones..birthdays through phones and marriages through phones..
.
I have seen many ppl ask that “do you think this virus will go away completely in a year ?” …I always say yes coz I am an optimist ..but even if it goes, will we be safe and sound like before..?
Will things go back to normal ..?
.
Yea we are seeing that things are getting normal even when the virus is still around us.
There is little bit change, like we are getting adapted.
We will use sanitisers and masks forever now..
We will wash and disinfect anything before eating..and etc.
Somewhere these are good things..
But when the time for machines will come..
Will our adaption still be a good thing ??

Will it be alright for us to stay isolated for the sake of machines. Will it be ok to stay alone away from our loved ones..?
.
Will you feel ok if someone discards some beautiful destination by saying  “this place doesn’t give me ideas please close the window”  (which we only dream of visiting) …?
.
These wonderful places which we are taking for granted are totally ignored by the machine obessed people.
I am hating this women for hating this wonderful creations.
.
For them it’s good breeding if you don’t shake anyone’s hand ..coz physical touch is not considered normal there.. people get offended by it..
.
For us touch is different kind of expression..
.
There is this one guy who doesn’t worship machine like others and now he is in trouble..coz
“On atavism the Machine can have no mercy.”
Read this novella to find out more 

The different kind of people mentioned in the books are present in real life too. Like that lecturer who gave speech on French Revolution. The ones who trust the government blindly till the very end. And the government itself first refuses everything that is happening and eventually when there is no hope just leaves the matter.

Spoiler Alert …!!

Please don’t read further if you haven’t read the story..

There are either two options which we will face if we get too depended on machines.

One where the machines will eventually take over us like in Terminator type movies or the one shown in this book

That eventually the machines will stop working when you get totally dependent on them.

And that’s how it should be. How can you forget yourself and depend on the machines for everything..where is that creative mind, that yearn to do something.

The humanity is lost. Everything gets practical. Machine takes place of God and so on..then this was meant to happen.

The way they didn’t want to see the nature was really disappointing. They way people were resisting from even seeing this beauty really break my heart. Specially when Himalayas and Greece came along.

How brainwashed the people are she thought that her own son was gone mad and all.. she was not read to believe what he was saying .. could this means that we should go on our dreams even when whole world is against us. Like he tried but couldn’t go further. But still he tried. He was successful in seeing the nature, to breath the natural air and see the pearl coloured clouds..

Why i read Archer?

After i Started reading, i joined our local library. My mom suggested me few authors to read like Sidney Sheldon, Agatha Christie and Jeffrey Archer. She said start with the Christie as it’s good for young mind but the book i took didn’t click well with me, i read only first chapter and had to return as i didn’t find it that interesting (now i have read Christie books and also find her books interesting ).

So the next book i got from library was The Prodigal Daughter by Jeffrey Archer although it is a second part of “Kane and Able” i liked it and I became an instant fan of Archer. I totally loved that book and the narrative style of Jeffrey Archer. It was my first book by archer and also the one that made me his fan.

This is my Jeffrey Archer collection (which is more than HP collection 😂)

Currently i own 10 books by Jeffrey Archer (including nothing ventured which is not in the above picture) which is more than all the Harry Potter books that i own (which is only 9).

Jeffrey Archer writes Drama and Thrillers. Drama includes the life story of a person or group of person who are related by fate and has lots of twist and turns ( don’t forget the unexpected suspense).

Thrillers are also very interesting and we can’t put the books down. We are constantly thinking what gonna happen and it makes it more and more interesting.

He also has a vast knowledge of painting and artists, which is shown in many of his book and one book is particularly based on it i.e. False Impression.

Jeffrey Archer was the Member of Parliament in the House of Lords and hence has a lot of political experience. Which shows in his books. His books has some or the other element of politics and i kind off enjoy that (it’s never boring). All the election campaign and then becoming a leader and the politics played by the leaders, everything. It is interesting and we kind off learn a bit more about Britain 😉.

One of the thing that i have noticed about Jeffrey Archer is that all his books have at least one mention of India. In one book there was a mention of Indira Gandhi becoming first Indian woman Prime Minister and the Protagonist was thinking when will that happen in Britain 😁 (in Matter of Honor).

I like that he considers his Indian fans while writing his books. In Clifton Chronicles one of the character fell in love with an Indian girl and also visits India. One of his shirt story is story of an Indian couple. He has a very big fan following in India and many times he visits India and meets his fans.

Following are the Archer books read by me :

  • Kane and Abel
  • The Prodigal Daughter (Kane and Abel 2)
  • Shall we tell the President? (Kane and Abel 3)
  • Not a Penny More, Not a Penny less
  • Prisoner of Birth
  • Matter of Honor
  • Sons of Fortune
  • Paths of Glory
  • False Impression
  • Honor Among thieves
  • The Fourth Estate
  • Heads you win

Short Stories collection by him which i have read :

  • A twist in a Tale
  • Twelve Red hearings
  • To cut a long story short
  • And thereby hangs a Tale

The Clifton Chronicles

  • Only time will tell
  • The Sins of Father
  • Best kept secret
  • Be careful what you wish for
  • Mightier than Sword
  • Cometh the Hour
  • This was a Man

I am Currently reading Nothing Ventured, which is the 24th book by Archer that i am reading. And its makes Jeffrey Archer as my most read author.

Nothing Ventured
(Recently released by Pan Macmillan)

Nothing Ventured is released recently and i am loving it. I am excited that this one is going to be a series on the life of a Detective William Warwick. It will not be a detective story but a story of a detective. I will let you all know how it turns out to be . 😉

Don’t think, Just start

Just today i read somewhere that

You don’t start out writing good stuff.

You start out writing crap and thinking its good stuff, and then gradually you become better at it.

– Octavia E. Butler

So that’s my today’s motivation to finally start writing. Rather than wasting my time to think what to write and then write a draft somewhere and show few ppl for approval, i thought its better this way. Because unless we try and make mistakes, how will we learn?

There is this theory where people say we should plan and do everything. Learn from others and their experience and do it. It is not necessary to learn by your mistakes only, you can learn by others mistakes too.

But i think ‘its crap.’

People who want to learn from others mistakes are too timid to accept that they made a mistake. They themselves want to be perfect . They want to win without making mistakes. They think they are learning from others mistake but in reality they are afraid to fail and start afresh. I think everyone don’t face same problems. Start your thing and learn simultaneously. That’s how you grow, by learning.

Any suggestions or corrections are always welcome 😉.

Fernweh, Epicure, bibliomaniac and many more things that define me …..

This post will make you understand who i am and what my future posts will be about.

As my name says i am a redheaded Bibliomaniac. Red headed not naturally like Weasley’s (though i wish to be) but yeah coloured red (coz i am a weasley fan) coz i love red (but my fav colour is blue).

And yeah very important thing is Bibliomaniac 😉. Coz i am a red head since 3 yes only but i am a bibliomaniac since 11yrs. Yeah isn’t it interesting that i am a book lover only since 11 yrs coz generally ppl are readers since their childhood. And ppl don’t consider someone a reader who knows when they started reading right.

But i know when i started reading and why i continued it and i like to tell everyone how i started it coz this story explains the quote by J. K. Rowling

If you don’t like to read, you haven’t found the right book.

J. K. Rowling

I started reading when i found that one book. Earlier my mom used to get me children’s book and used to read to me. I used to love stories from childhood itself but when i was in 10th i.e. 14 year old i found one book from my school library “A Naughtiest Girl in the school” by Enid Blyton.

The book which made me the reader i am today.

Since i read this book. I became a reader and after this I read abridged version of Little women from my school my library next and so on the journey continued. After this there was no turning back.

As the title suggests I am a Fernweh. I ache for the distant places and the cravings fro the travel sometimes i crave for the places I have never been too.

Epicure, the lover of fine drink and food. Food and Drink are my love and also my guilty pleasure. Although i am vegetarian i love food and my favourite food is Sandwich.

I am a turophile i.e. A person who loves cheese 😍. I can have cheese with everything. It makes a boring vegetable a lot yummy.

Epistemophiliac is the love for knowledge. Epistemophilia and Inquisitive goes hand in hand. I am inquisitive coz i love knowledge and don’t forget the Curiosity. The curiousity is what makes me ask lots of questions which again leads to me gaining lots of knowledge. My aim is to become a “Know it all” ( like hermione)

Yeah it is very much important for you all to know that i am a huge Potterhead and my blog post may contain reference to anything from the Wizarding world. 😁

Javaphile or say addiction to coffee, whatever you say but i love coffee and minimum two cups of coffee a day is my requirement. ☕

Ergophile, yeah weird to say know that a person loves to work. I am a believer that a person should do what they love to do. And if a person does that then he can become an ergophile

Sapiophile i.e. me is person who gets attracted to intelligent people.
